Green Sanctuary Earth Institute of Pennsylvania and the Awbury Arboretum are embarking on a collaborative venture!  Next spring, the Arboretum will be the host of three honey bee hives on the grounds of the Arboretum not far from Cope House.  Awbury Arboretum has established an agriculture village on the Washington Lane side of the property where the Weavers Way Farm operates.  Hosting a community apiary is a logical step in developing the agriculture village. The Awbury Arboretum is a pesticide-free zone, and will be a true sanctuary for honey bees who are lucky enough to live there.

Anaiis Salles, founder of GSEIPA, and a happy urban beekeeper, stewards a hive located on a private residence on the Arboretum property.  It seemed natural to ask the Arboretum if a partnership was a possibility.  GSEIPA will design, implement and manage the apiary program with the help of many other community partners, such as the Philadelphia County 4-H Club and the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild.  Awbury Arboretum looks forward to being a neighborhood activity site for next year’s Philadelphia Honey Festival. Beginning beekeeper classes will be offered at the Awbury Arboretum in early 2012, speakers and demonstrations are being scheduled. There is also perfect classroom space for harvesting honey in the summer of 2012.  With good stewardship, the Awbury Arboretum will be bottling honey with its own label next year

Enjoy the short video and use the  link to the Fundly campaign!  Spread the word and bring the apiary to life with a wonderful roster of instructors, events, and activities designed to  support the honey bee and the craft of urban beekeeping.
